Hello all :D ,

I am new to the contax world. I read another thread with photos by Vario-Sonnar 28-70 on 5D and I really love results of this combination. I want to give a try now but still have some questions want to ask experienced c-hing here:

- I saw few 28-70 in mapcamera and is around HKD$27xx. Is it better to buy in mapcamera or in reputable 2nd hand shop in HK? (I don't know much about this, just know there are few in TST. Any c-hing can introduce some more to me?)

- I read some other reviews states that 28-85 is better than 28-70, does any c-hing has experience with these two lens and have some comparison with these two lens?

- Any adaptor recommandation?

- Is it possible to buy lens hood for the lens in HK?

Thank you very much!! :D :) :P

Bryan

I have both the 28-85 and 28-70 but frankly do not use them very much as I prefer prime lenses to zoom lenses.

Based on my brief experience, both are fantastic lenses that can produce good results. Image quality of 28-85 may be slightly better but the lens is much more heavier than the very light and compact 28-70. The 28-85 is slightly faster. When shoot against light, I find the 28-70 is more flare resistant whereas the 28-85 in some situations from the view finder I can already detect the flare.

Thanks fuwen!

Yes, I think primes are always better than zooms!

I planned to go to 九寨溝 in octorber and I am planning my lens setup right now. The list is 17-40, 24-105, 70-200 + one contax lens. I have no idea which range I should get if I go for prime. I wish someone can enlighten me for this :D

My last trip to Jiu Zhai Valley many years back.
http://www.fuwen.net/photos_travelchina/index.php

I brought along lenses from 16 fisheye to 200 tele-tessar. But to me I did not find opportunity for superwide and long tele shot. I think range from 28mm to 135mm will be good enough. A 25mm maybe worthwhile too.

One major mistake I made in that trip is to use too slow a shutter speed (although I was on tripod for almost all the shots). The wind was too strong and therefore some of the pictures did not appear to be very sharp due to moving leaves, even though they were small in the composition.

Have a nice trip to Jiu Zhai, u will not regret. But maybe mid September is a better time to catch the leaves just turning red. But as now the global weather goes messy maybe the season change has swifted some how I am not sure.

Sorry, realised that I also went in mid October. I remembered the main reason was to catch the leaves turning red, so u have a mixture of colours like red, yellow and green. However that year the Autumn came late so in the whole trip we only managed to get TWO trees with red leaves, ha ha!

As you will bring 3 Canon zoom lenses for the trip, I think the remaining Contax lens can be: (in the order of my preference)
1. D21 - for ultimate corner sharpness
2. MP60 or MP100 - for macro
3. P50/1.4 - for low light situation
