Well this is one mis-information that keep prop up every once in a while and still happen to be around.

There is never ever a M42 version of that 300/4.0 Sonnar. The only CZJ Sonnar that ever were made is the original version with the big fat tripod bushing. The stated version ( normally referred to as the Zebra ) had been promoted back then as to be produced in M42. Truth is by then CZJ made the lens in P6 mount and they had already develop an Auto M42 / Electric adapter for the P6 lens. So the Mfr see no need to made a separate M42 version.

That lens as stated can only be get as a P6 mount version.

The only M42 mount version of CZJ Sonnar 300/4.0 is the one before it which is optically different. In any case, all CZJ Sonnar of both 180, & 300 are highly regarded

鏡尾~ M42 的，小弟資歷不深，未識分呢支鏡個 mount 有冇比人改過


不過影過無限遠無問題 (M42 > adaptor alpha mount > KM D5D

感覺
1) 重 (Spec 寫 2Kg, 我未度過)
2) 光圈全開成像良好 (本人覺得), 收一級經已十分 sharp, 收兩級則非常 sharp (收兩級是 5.6)
3) 手動對焦感覺良好

Well, look like I am at least still pretty versed in History. This is actually an adapted P6 mount 300 Sonnar.

See that chrome ring near the mount, if you grab it firmly and twist the ring, you can feel that it can be turned and the whole setup of that portion taken right off the lens. This part is the dedicated M42 Auto to P6 lens adapter and original Pentacon parts when the lens is sold as M42 use.

After that portion of the lens is oiff, you will see the original P6 mount

Your experience of the lens is pretty consistent with previous user experience, after all this lens design is done before the WAR ( WW-II that is ) and the lens do not enjoy any form of multi-coating. And most of all its a lens for 6X6, not 35mm film format. But still, all 180 & 300 Sonnar of these vintage are all considered very fine performing lens.

My test on the two P6 mount 300mm lens
First on is pentacon 300 F4 preset lens



Second one is Mc version Carl Zeiss jena 300mm F4 auto lens


Test Shoot, 100% crop from Minolta D5D with adaptor, optimum camera setting, 5 sample shoots were taken to minimise errors. i.e. focusing and shaking. Photos show below are the center portion of the original picture.

results are very clear, however, I have to stress that Lens quality produced by East German can vary a lot between samples, although,
i do not have the spare money nor time to get multiple samples of 300mm lens, this is what I have learned from my experience from their M42 siblings.
