There is no need o be sorry about anything .. we all entitle to our own opinion. And I sure agree Sigma past record had not be great. as regard their construction. Performance vise, just like other independent Lens Mfr. Its simply not so easy to generalize. As the like of Tamron, Tokina and Sigma made a lot of lens in many variation. Always there are pretty hefty price difference between theirs and the Brand's so after the price, one should really evaluate the performance vs the cost.
That said, Sigma had pretty much redeem themselves quite well in recent years.
The notion of a stellar performing 50/1.4 is of course possible, the problem is if its marketable. As consumer perspective on such lens had pretty much limit their market niche and price bracket. With such limitation even the best of Mfr might find it hard to achive a plateau of performance. Of all 50/1.4 of old and new, the one that can be truly said to be performing ( after my own experience ) is the CZJ 50/1.4 for PB mount ( a very pricey lens in its days ) and current Leica 50/1.4 summilux for M, but then this M lens cost almost 30K retail ....
