Generally, there is 2 major approach to earn $:
1. Shorter product cycle, large sales volume, lower profit margin per product
2. Longer product cycle, smaller sales volume, higher profit margin per product
Volkswagen vs Porsche
Exactly, and as Leica goes, reflecting on their previous financial result, the M film body is about one of the lowest profit margin when the Sport Scope is one of the highest ( and curiously one of the best selling ). Within the M range, the Lens is about the highest in profit margin and high on demand, and the film body is pretty low on demand compared to the lens .. M9 change all that. M9 is in top demand now ..
So for Leica to release new film body ( limited edition do not count ). it got to break the low demand in volume and as is, I do not see Leica doing that unless they could clearly admit the disadvantage the current M film body had and rectify that .. otherwise re-releasing something akin to current MP/M7 will not rejuvenate the M film body business. Effort would be best employed on something else .. say production of M9 to be speed up, production of M lens speed up or new lens to be R&D/produced ..
