i have played with TC-1 (G28/3.5) and STF(Soft Transfer Focus)
Albeit their qualities are excellent,
it is hard to say which is close to a particular Zeiss lens.

For example, the G28/3.5 has excellent resolution but its colour rendition is a bit bluish, resulting in extreme bluish sky in fine days. My experience with my own (limited) Zeiss lenses don't coincide with such colour rendition.

Similarly, the said G85/1.4 gives tastes and characters which are completely different from that of Zeiss C/Y 85/1.4.

By the way, Minolta has three "special" lenses, ie STF, AutoFocus 500/8 reflex lens and 100mm "soft" lens (resulting from exaggerated/ deliberatively under-corrected spherical abberations).

If you want to have lenses carrying the names of Leica, Zeiss and Rokkor, the easiest way is to get a RF with M-mount. The M-mount G Rokkor 28/3.5 really worth trying.

Minolta has many good lenses.

The 35-70mm f/3.5 and 70-210mm f/4 are the two lenses which had been re-banded as Leica R. ( The lenses were specially selected by Leica..).

The 250mm f/5.6 reflex and 24mm f/2.8 VFC are also good in term of quality and their uniqueness.

It's worth to try.

Can we know more about which Minolta lens are of good quality, please ? It is a bit difficult to find information from the web when you don't even have the models.

By the way, I have always like the D7D's layout of controls - knobs and everything, very similar to the N1.

Then again, is it not true that lens is everything in a system because someday somehow u will change the body. Why is Minotla doing this to its users - lens availability is so scarce - good lens are not in production or always out of stock ?

Minolta X300 was my first camera and then the XD. In those day, I could only have the 35-70mm and tokina 50-200mm. However, the photos taken by the 35-70MM are still very good. Even thought I had changed my gears from minolta to canon then to Contax, I collect back the MD lens again. Now I have XD and XK body and some MD lenses including 24mm vfc and 250mm reflex.

I heard that there is one hong kong forum in dchome dedicated to minolta fans but i never tried it.

I very agree with jason's quote that famous (AF) minolta lenses are very hard to find in hong kong (and taiwan as well).

In terms of performance and versatility, I recomomend G-lenses (ie status analogous to L-lenses of Canon) of

1. 28/3.5 TC-1 (this is a P&S camera but discontined a month ago), brochure available at http://my.reset.jp/~inu/ProductsDataBase/Products/MINOLTA/TC-1/TC-1.htm

2. 35/1,4 and 85/1,4.

If you like old 2nd hand manual focus lenses as well, i saw a MC 58/1,2 in tst! It is said to be a gem but i am afraid it's expensive.
