Let's dismiss whether its mechanical or electronic ( in anyway, I do not agree that simply because its electronic that it should not cost ), but from a pure price/feature/performance point of view. it made very little sense.
A RF body had no Mirror, thus it cannot provide viewing of actual scene, especially with framing, focusing and DOF preview. On the other hand, Live preview using the sensor can provide a new way of viewing, framing but probably not focusing. However, with the way Leica sticking to the M structure. that means the RF mechanism will stay, but needless to say, while the mechanism work reasonably well in the M system & the previous Screw mount. ITs doubtful that its got enough accuracy for high density/high definition digital capture with plenty of theose Fast M lens in open aperture.
Further more, to facilitate RF coupling, new range of lens will have to be developed that allow RF coupling in the focal length of 18, 21, 26, & upward to 40mm which will translate to coverage equivalent to film with 1.33X type
In a word, it will place new constraints and new challenge to the system which IMHO the M RF mechanism is not the best solution. I am sure many will continous to enjoy the M in a digital package and I do not doubt its going to sell also. But I do not think its the system to have. AFAIC, Digital is already pretty much elctronic, and Leica should emply every mean to exploit that frontier, not limiting themselves to the way M used to be. My take for this matter is the sensor should be able to provide live preview, which will open up the digital M for Close up, Tele, and numerous possibilities.
And for real, by the time Leica delive such a body, I doubt the 5K price will be anything competetive at all. Well but then Leica is no longer a real phtographic tools anyway, more POSH & status instead.
