So, here are some general rules that I have been using seen the first day of taking photos:

1. Metering the mid-tone area for any photo before pressing the shutter button.

2. When meter a mostly white area, +2ev.

2a. When meter a mostly black area, -2ev.

3. When backlit, +2ev.

These are the only rules that I can think of and used by me.

What is mid-tone area ?

For example, Take photos of Lotus.
Is it necessary for me to adjust EV compensation, under condition of spot metering.

Or is it worth of me to buy a meter to learn much more?

Buying another meter can't help as long as one does not understand what "exposure" means.

唔怕浪費的話， 用唔同 setting take 多幾張， record 低環境, film, camera settings, 試多幾次，揀自己喜歡的 outcome, make your own rule!
