The problem of your pictures is that the light meter system of your camera, no matter how advanced it is, does not understand zone system.
To put it simply, "Zone System" is placing your subject in its proper zone.
If you want to have a correct exposure of the people around the fire. Simply meter the people.
If the fire is your subject, you have to understand that fire is not at 18% grade. The center of fire is much brighter than the middle grade. probably around Zone VII to Zone VIII, or even XI. That means you need to overexpose 2 to 3, even 4 stops, in order to get the correct exposure. (But from your pictures, because the meter of your camera also considered the dark surrounding, you can see that the fire becomes all white, i.e. no information). That said, if you meter from your camera, you may need to underexpose, rather than overexpose.
I think the difficulty here is knowing the proper zone of fire. And certainly, fire in red color should be much darker than fire in blue color. And the color temperature is much lower too (that is another issue, not related to exposure). In short, why don't you just bracket it?
