Only a couple of PRO lab ( workshop ) do direct print today, but for real, the methodology is not unsound. Its the operator and the tech. Scanning a Slide and print them out give far better control over using direct print, Same as for Neg ..
What lies though for today's lab is they never take the time to Calibrate for specific film type nor they maintain their printer scanner calibration at all.
Still I say quality cost, at today's price for print in Hong Kong , we simply cannot ask the printer for much. Go check the price of actual hand display quality print price at those pro labs and you will know what I am talking about .. So I pretty much give up on printing from film by lab for any decent quality. I can do it far better myself with my own film scanner/printer both color and B&W ...
