As a long time film AND digital user, I think this debate is pretty much senseless. Lets realize that consumer grade optics was from a technical point of view pretty low on requirement and at todays' technological knowhow, even the most consumer oriented Mfr can produce top grade optics for the need. The principal issue is till market vs price vs marketing vs mfr concern.
In the end, the ZM and ZF certainly do not break any ground in optical innovations. Let's put it this way, their low volume of sale almost guarantee that it will fellow a traditional and conservative approach to optical design and manufacture. But this does nto take away the fact that the new lens was also made to some of the best specification from a user point of view.
And lets not degrade Nikon / Canon's effort in IS/VR ... sure if one take a single optical design and add the feature later, you are looking at degrading the lens performance. Much like early Zoom being vari-focal and need to compromise. But today's lens of this nature is designed from initial stage to incorporate the features and quality VR/IS lens perform above abnd beyond their non-IS/VR forbearer of similar price bracket. Canon and Nikon can inorporate new or untried innovation on consumer optics because they can be sure of a decent return from the slaes. Likewise, Zeiss is not likely to try that; that simply do not means Zeiss do not have the capability, just that its managing a mfr concern over market expectation.
This business concern is best seen is Tamron and Leica; Leica is not shy in using exotic glass, and expensive manufacturing innovation for their lens, but equally so their lens is almost priced out of mass market. Tamron on the other hand develop innovation that allow it to be mass manufactured and keep cost down.
As far as technological innovation goes, I wonder if there's really any worth extensive applaud from the last 2 decades. Most are evolutionary, but most also simply are just adeptation of optical innovation used before from more demanding fields ( medical, industrial and research need on optics ). Just one example of interest from my own experience, even 10 years ago when I am field engineer for a medical imaging system ( digital X-Ray ); between the engineers, we all rekon the Leica lens used for the capture is just fast ( its a 0.9 lens ) and that the other make of lens yield a better image. Just to tell you what that mfr of lens are, its called Tamron ( LOL
