Actually if you got to check for real, the G1 do have a shutter, its just by default the shutter is open, not closed.
There is one very simple fact. The sensor , as the medium for recording an image. if needed to do other thing ( to compose, focus, meter etc ... ) simply will load the sensor circuit, adn require a lot more work to do before it can even capture an image ( from the time you start pushing the shutter button ) while a sensor that only sit powered up and waiting behind the shutter can instantly get to capture the image and in a clean condition ... its sort of like the Swiss Army Knife vs a Bowie, both can be used, but one can always do better if not so versatile ...
